CHAPTER 22

I speed through the dark backroads of Bridge Creek making my way closer to the bar, hoping my longer but less known route would keep me undetected from any immortal forces in search of me. I have faith in Dex and Sofie, but I have to take precautions on the off chance someone slips by.

As I close in on the final mile, I press my foot to the floor, eager to reach my destination. However, one issue still remains. How the fuck am I going to convince Cole who he is?

Hey Cole, you're an Angel so I need you to come with me. Yeah, that’s going to work real well.

“This is gonna suck,” I mutter to myself.

“Oh, come on,” a voice speaks from my right, causing me to jump. “Have a little faith!”

I turn to find Sofie relaxing comfortably in the passenger seat, a smile beaming ear to ear. I slam on the brakes, sending us skidding to a stop.

“Sofie!” I exclaim. “What happened? Where’s Dex?”

“Hey, baby,” a voice whispers in my ear from the backseat.

I turn around to be met with a kiss.

“Dex,” I smile as his lips release mine. “What happened?”

“Reader’s Digest version?” Sofie offers. “They didn’t live to regret their stupid decision.”

I sigh in relief as I look them over and confirm they’re alright.

“But we’re not out of the woods yet, Drey,” Dex interjects. “They know we’re leaving to commence the search so they’re going to step up their game.”

“I don’t get it, if they want me dead why not just launch a full blown attack? Why send two or three at a time?”

“The same reason Father doesn’t send the whole army down. Humans can’t know we exist. If humans knew Angels existed it would affect the one thing God refuses to influence – free will. If they know Lucifer and his army are real then it also confirms the existence of God as well, in which Lucifer risks God gaining endless amounts of additional followers.”

“So, it’s like an ego thing for him?”

“Somewhat. But faith also influences things like power.”

“Okay,” Sofie interrupts, “I know you’re super intrigued by our history and all, but we have a job to do. Where is he?”

“Wait,” Dex cautions. “We need to discuss some things first.”

“Like what?!” Sofie exclaims.

“Like the fact that we don’t know he’s one of us. He may be an enemy planted to keep watch.”

“He’s not an enemy,” I respond with unwavering certainty.

“How can you be sure?” Dex eyes me skeptically.

“Because I’d be able to sense it. Trust me, he means me no harm.”

“See?” Sofie states smugly, sticking her tongue out at Dex. “So who is it?”

“His name’s Cole,” I exhale deeply. “But Sofie, I wouldn’t get too excited. I don’t think it’s Gabe.”

“He doesn’t even know who he is. What makes you so sure?”

“Because,” Dex replies, sinking back into the seat, “he’s in love with Audrey.”

Sofie’s posture slightly deflates.

“We don’t know that!” I snap defensively, though he said what I was secretly thinking.

Dex scoffs, eyeing me with a look similar to the one I witnessed earlier tonight when he saw me with Declan.
